After reading about other USB to Serial cables based on the prolific chip and the problems people reported when using the cable on Windows 7, I decided on purchasing this. I hooked up my Cisco 2950 to my Win7 64bit laptop using this cable and it just worked. The OS pulled in the necessary drivers from Widows Update. Didn t need to use the driver disk that shipped with this cable.

The cable feels well built overall.

I had bought another brand of serial cable that wouldn t fit onto the sewing machines serial port. It was the right type, just that the end that connected to the sewing machine was had some kind of moulded plastic around the serial connector. I was disappointed as the makers of an embroidery product had recommended a particular cable. I found this one on amazon. Looked at the picture and thought I d give it a try. Not only was it cheaper. I worked with no problems. So yes, it gets a recommendation.

I used this to replace an adapter I had that changes serial to USB. It died and this works. It s been a few years since serial ports were common on mother boards and this is the answer for my 14 year old Davis weather station which still works with no issues except wind chill is calculated differently today.

This adapter is built around a FTDI chip. FTDI has awesome drivers for every platform, including Windows8. Windows update knows about them so you don t need to hunt for them when you plug this adapter into a Window 7 machine.

Very well made. Works like it s supposed to. You definitely want the FTDI chipset vs the Prolific chipset. Using with Windows 7 Professional on a desktop Dell.

This was a nice addition to my bag to go with my new laptop with no serial port. Sometimes you just need a DB9, because apparently switch vendors think laptops still come with serial ports. Whether it be Windows or Linux Ubuntu 12.04 in my case, it works perfectly.
